Atherosclerosis is a disease of the arteries characterized by the deposition of plaques of fatty material such as cholesterol on their inner walls.
Most cardiovascular disease, including coronary artery disease, stroke, and peripheral artery disease involve atherosclerosis.
Atherosclerosis can be studied with emka TECHNOLOGIES systems:
- in vitro, in tissue baths to understand mechanical response of isolated arteries or aorta to drug challenges
- in vivo, measuring blood pressure, a major cause of Atherosclerosis. Blood pressure, measured with implanted telemetry, pressure catheters or non-invasively is then analyzed by emka’s software, to provide standard parameters (systolic, diastolic and mean blood pressure, amplitude, heart rate) but also an index of baroreflex sensitivity (available in ecgAUTO software). Indeed, BRS is used in preclinical research as a prognostic factor in cardiology.
